Hemp Seed Dressing With Dill

This plant-based dill dressing uses blended hemp and chia seeds for a creamy, pourable texture. With flavors reminiscent of a dill pickle, this oil-free topper is perfect for salads, bowls, or as a dip for fresh veggies.

Why I Developed This Recipe

I love the creaminess of cashew dressings, but I wanted to experiment with different bases. Since I was planning to add minced fresh dill in the last step of this recipe, I knew I needed the texture to be thick enough to keep the dill from sinking to the bottom. Of course, it also had to pour well.

I knew hemp seeds would blend into creamy plant-based milk, and I added chia seeds as a thickener. The result is a dressing that pours easily but is not too thin to coat lettuce and other veggies, making it a great topper for salads, bowls, and wraps. Try using it as a veggie dip too!

It is easy to get meals to the table when you start with homemade condiments! Simply match the dressing to the ingredients you have on hand, for example, a can of black beans and a bag of greens make a quick southwestern salad that you can top with my Vegan Creamy Salsa Dressing. Make a grain bowl with spinach, cucumber, tomato, and my Cashew Tzatziki for a Greek-style salad, or try a baked tofu wrap by using my Vegan Curry Dip as a spread.

1/2 cup Soymilk

1/4 White Wine Vinegar

1/4 cup Hemp Hearts

1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds

1/2 cup Fresh Dill, roughly chopped, loosely packed

1/4 teaspoon Garlic Powder

1/4 teaspoon Onion Powder

1 teaspoon Nutritional Yeast

pinch White Pepper

Salt, to taste

1/2 cup Fresh Dill, finely minced, loosely packed


  1. Combine the soymilk, white wine vinegar, hemp hearts, chia seeds, 1/2 cup dill, (the rough chopped one, reserve the finely minced dill for the last step) garlic powder, onion powder, nutritional yeast, white pepper, and salt in a blender jar.
  2. Blend in a high-speed blender until smooth, stopping frequently to scrape down the sides.
  3. Pour the dressing into a jar and stir in the finely minced fresh dill. Taste and adjust seasonings.
  4. Refrigerate until needed. The flavor will improve with a few hours of refrigeration, as the dill infuses into the dressing base.
